During this first speech by an African American, Revels argued for the rights of fellow African American legislators who had been illegally taken out of the assembly by members of the white Democratic party of Georgia. Hiram Rhodes Revels was a Prince Hall Freemason, and served as Grand Chaplain of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio. He was elected to the Senate from Mississippi to fill the unexpired term of Albert G.
